Poker Terms
All In: The poker term for when you bet all of your remaining chips.
Ante: Forced bets to get the action going. A small bet is put into the pot by every player.
Bad Beat: When one player gets lucky and beats a much better starting hand, e.g. someone with a 3 and a 5 goes all in, gets called with a pair of aces and the player with a 3
and 5 gets a 3 and a 5 in the community cards and beats the aces with two pair.
Blinds: Forced bets to get the action going.
Blind Raise: When a player raises the bet without looking at his cards.
Bluff: When you bet a weak hand hoping to force all other players to fold.
Bottom Pair: When you have a pair using the lowest card on the table.
Broadway: A straight with Ace high, A,K,Q,J,10.
Bullets: Pocket Aces.
Burn: The dealer discards the top card before the flop, the turn and the river to help stop players seeing the next card. This card is called a burn.
Call: To match the previous bet in the current round of betting. You have to call (or raise) to stay in the hand.
Check: To not bet. You can only do this if all players betting before you in the current round of betting have checked also.
Check Raise: To check and then raise in the same betting round after someone bets.
Chips: Tokens used instead of cash at the table.
Chip Leader: The player with the most amount of chips on the board is the chip leader.
Community Cards: The cards in the middle of the table used by all of the players.
Connectors: A starting hand that could be used to make a possible straight using
the community cards e.g. you start with 6,7, and the flop comes, 5,8,9 to give you a straight of 5,6,7,8,9.
Dead Man's Hand: Two pair, Aces and eights.
Dog: A player who is behind in the hand.
Draw: When a player is waiting for a card to make a hand e.g. if a player has four cards of the same suit, or 3,4,5,6 and is waiting for a 2 or 7 to make a straight.
Drawing Dead: When you are waiting on a card to make a hand that is already beaten.
Family Pot: A pot into which all players on the table bet.
Flop: The first three community cards out on the table.
Flush: Five cards of the same suit.
Flush Draw: When you are waiting for one card to make a flush, i.e. you already have four cards of the same suit.
Fold: To throw your hand away.
Four Of A Kind: Four cards of the same rank.
Free Card: A card that you don't have to call or bet to see.
Full House: Three cards of the same rank, paired with two of another rank.
Heads Up: A game where there are only two players playing for the pot.
High Card: When you can't even make a pair, you have to play the highest card in your hand, e.g. Ace high.
Kicker: A card used to determine a winner when two players have the same pair or two pair, e.g. a pair of 8s with a King would beat a pair of 8s with a 6.
Lay Down: To fold your hand.
Lead: To be ahead in the hand.
Loose: A player who plays a lot of hands.
Offsuit: Cards that are not of the same suit.
Out: A card that will help make your hand and usually win it. e.g. if you have 3,4,5,6
then your outs would be a 2 and 7 to make the straight.
Outdraw: When you make a better hand than the other players by drawing a card.
Overcard: A card that is higher than any of the cards on the table e.g. if a player has an Ace and the board is K,Q,9 then the player with an Ace has an overcard.
Pair: Two cards of the same rank, e.g. two 4s.
Picture Cards: Cards with pictures on, i.e. Kings, Queens, Jacks.
Pocket Pair: Two hole cards of the same rank.
Pocket Rockets: Two aces as your hole cards.
Position: Your place at the table, which can determine what cards that you play. To be in late position is better as you can see what others have done before you.
Pot: The amount of money that can be won during the hand.
Quads: Four of a kind.
Raise: To raise the bet in the current round of betting. This must be raised by a minimum of the big blind.
Re-raise: To raise in a round of betting after someone has already raised.
Read: To try and figure out what someone's hand might be.
Represent: Betting in such a way to make it look like you have a certain hand, e.g. if 2 Aces come out on the flop and you bet high, you might be representing that you have an Ace in your hand and therefore trip Aces.
River: The fifth community card out on the table.
Royal Flush: A,K,Q,J,10 of the same suit. The best hand available in poker.
Runner-runner: A hand in which the turn and river card help make a better hand e.g. a player with King and a 3 up against a player with Queen and a 3 with a flop of Q,Q,2 would need a King on the turn and a King on the river or running kings to win the hand.
Set: Three of a kind where one card is used from the table with a pocket pair in the hole.
Short Stack: A player with the smallest amount of chips on the table is said to be the short stack.
Showdown: When all players left in the hand show their cards to see who has the best hand.
Side Pot: A pot that occurs when one or more players are all-in. You can only win the equivalent of your bet from each of the players still in the hand.
Slow Play: When you have a great starting hand or flop a great hand, you sometimes slow play to to pretend you don't have much so that you can try and draw more chips out of your opponents and hope they make a weaker hand.
Split Pot: A pot that is shared by 2 or more players as they have the same winning hand.
Straight: Five cards of consecutive rank, e.g. 2,3,4,5,6.
Straight Draw: When you are waiting for one card to make a straight, i.e. you already have four cards of consecutive rank.
Straight Flush: Five cards of consecutive rank in the same suit, e.g. 2D,3D,4D,5D,6D.
Steal: To win the pot by bluffing.
Tell: Something a player may do to giveaway whether he has a strong hand or weak hand.
The Nuts: The best hand that can be made from the available cards e.g. if you hold two 2s in your hand and the 5 community cards are two 2s, a 8, a Jack and a King then the nuts would be Four 2s.
Three Of A Kind: Three cards of the same rank.
Tight: A player who doesn't play many hands.
Tilt: When someone plays too loose and aggressive out of frustration, and makes bad decisions to try and win back money that he has lost.
Top Pair: When you have a pair using the highest card on the table.
Trips: Three of a kind where two cards are used from the community cards and one from your hole cards.
Turn: The fourth community card out on the table.
Two Pair: Two pairs of the same rank, e.g. two 3s and two Ks.
