Poker PositionTaking a nine handed game as an example, the three players to the left of the dealer are in early position, the next 3 players to the left in middle position and the dealer and the 2 players to his right are in late position. Early position is not good because you have to decide whether to call or raise without knowing what most of the other players are going to do, so it's best to only play really good starting hands from this position. In middle position, you can play a bit looser as you have seen how a few players have acted and if a few have already followed, then you know you have got more chance of winning the hand. Late position is the best though as you've already seen what most players are going to do with their hand and you can act accordingly. Sometimes you can win a hand by betting in late position if nobody before you has bet. |
